William Crawford & Elizabeth Sharkey
Lily Saliba
Elizabeth Sharkey married William Crawford on 31st December 1925 at 19 ,Howard Street , Glasgow (a registry office):
William Crawford, Engine fitters helper, batchelor, age 23, residing at 17 Balfour street , Port Glasgow. Parents: James Crawford a Farm Laburer and Mary Crawford [Miss McDade].
Elizabeth Sharkey, Spinster, age 19, residing at 5 Chalmers street, Greenock. Parents: Patrick Sharkey an engine fitters helper and Sarah Sharkey [Miss Mount].
They would have their first child very soon after. William Edward born on 25th January,1926. They also had a daughter called Sarah, i estimated her Dob crudely by using the electoral roll as 1927. Then there was James, using same method i got his dob to 1929. And also Patrick, Patrick died aged only 22 at his mothers house 14 Oakdale road, Liverpool. He was born in 1931.
When Elizabeth came to Liverpool in 1939, she came alone so it was a puzzle as to where her children where and how come she had reverted to using her maiden name of Sharkey instead of her married name Crawford.
To confuse things even further, Elizabeth nipped off to London in 1941 and married Michael Saliba, i think he was in the Navy. In any case after her marriage, she came right back to Oakdale road. As she was known as Lily, she was now Lily Saliba.
So, what about her children ? Well it looks like Sarah lived with her for a bit, James lived with her the longest and also Patrick lived with her for a while, before his death at such a young age in 1953.And i've no idea where they all ended up.
Lily passed away 13 November 1970, her mother Sarah passed away the next day. Both of them are buried in Allerton Cemetary, along with Lilys son Patrick.
I've no idea what happened to Lilys husband William Crawford, but it was possible to find out quite a bit about him and it probably explains a lot. Like their marriage certificate says, his Father was James Crawford a farm labourer and his mother was Mary McDaid [not McDade]. William had also been married before, and infact was still married when he married Elizabeth Sharkey. William had married Helen Sands at St.John Church, Port Glasgow in October 1922. She had left him and gone to Canada with her Mother and Sisters. We also find out that William is indeed Irish:
William Crawford was born on 8th October 1902 at Porthall, Lifford, Donegal:
The Crawfords are a very large family and have been in Donegal for generations.Someone else has done part of a tree for Williams parents:
Porthall is only a small village, and there is probably still the same Crawford family there today. For an idea of just how large the family is, here's a snippet from a newspaper:
