The Sharkeys

Patrick Sharkey and Sarah Mount 

 

Patrick Sharkey :

Patrick was born [presumably] a few days before 8th March 1875, as that is the date he was baptised at St. Eugenes in Derry City.


 His parents had married on 4th January 1875 at St.Columbas Long Tower in Derry. Francis Sharkey and Elizabeth Hughes. Patrick had had one other sibling, a girl, Rose Catherine who was born in and died shortly after 1876.

 

Sarah Mount: 

  Sarah was born in 1883, 6th January. To William Mount and Catherine O'Brien.[married in 1867]. Sarah was one of 11 children.

Patrick and Sarah where married at St. Eugenes, Derry City on 3rd September 1905. Patrick described as a "Labourer" and Sarahs occupation described as "factory" [presumably the famous shirt works]. Both living at Thomas Street, which had been the Mount family home.

Across the sea to Scotland:
  Not long after Patrick and Sarah married, they left the Emerald Isle and moved to Glasgow. Sarahs brother James and his wife would follow too along with other family members. Times where hard, work short, and the flow of people backwards and forewards from Scotland to Ireland was commonplace, more like a commute.

 Lily Saliba Elizabeth Sharkey married William Crawford on 31st December 1925 at 19 ,Howard Street , Glasgow (a registry office):   William Crawford, Engine fitters helper, batchelor, age 23, residing at 17 Balfour street , Port Glasgow. Outbreak of World War II

   Around 1939, the time of the Census [or Register] the Sharkeys had literally scattered and left Greenock. Thomas and Patrick (jnr) both serving in the forces, and ending up in London after the war and staying. Tom Sharkey:   Josephine was working in London and stayed and married there. Josephine Sharkey, with her daughter June:   Kathleen was working on the Isle of Wight and ended up marrying and staying in London. Annie had been working in London and had gone to Aylsbury to have her first child. The London Hosps where sending women and children out of the city at the time.  Annie: Elizabeth, who had married in 1926 was registered living in Liverpool at 95, Upper Parliment Street. She was alone with no children and no husband. In 1940 she was to move to 14 Oakdale Road, just near the famous Penny Lane. Derry City Cem Plot MA 382

I was recently looking at the Find a Grave records for Derry City Cemetery and i came across this entry. William was one of the men killed at Bloody Sunday, clicking the picture should take you to the Find a Grave entry where it has a short bio. I'd come across this plot before in my own tree research and the name William McKinney so i looked a bit deeper into it. I checked out some trees on Ancestry and found them incomplete or just plain incorrect, and some stuff just doesn't add up. On the face of it, interred is Willie McKinney, his parents Michael and Nancy, and Grandparents  William and his wife Catherine. But lets start at the beginning. The first person interred there was William Kilmany in 1897, and the plot belonged to and presumably still does , his widow Catherine, she was interred there the following year. . I've seen the name in multiple versions, Kilmeany,McKilmeany etc and i'm none the wiser as to who they are/where. The next person interred there is Joh...
